BRONCO:
McInvale, Baird run wild
West Hills boys, Torrey girls look good

Matt McInvale and Courtney Baird both ran away from quality opposition at the Bronco Invitational.

The meet, held September 12 at Kit Carson Park, matched schools in varsity races over a hilly, 2.0-mile course.

McInvale, a junior at Ramona, made his season debut with a 9:53 on the course.  He won by a wide margin over a field that included talents like Rancho Bernardo's Sean Ricketts (second, 10:05) and West Hills' Evan Fox (3rd, 10:14).

Baird, a senior at Helix, had an even more one-sided race, running 11:37 to win by 0:16 seconds.  She left behind runners like Francis Parker's Angela Petersen (second, 11:53); Rancho Bernardo's Julie Manson (third, 12:06), and Torrey Pines' Camille Dredge (fourth, 12:08).

In small schools varsity races, El Capitan's David Olsen (10:55) and Escondido's Lanele Cox (12:27) both ran to comfortable victories.

There was no team scoring, but it was hard to ignore the efforts of the West Hills boys and Torrey Pines girls teams.

West Hills packed four runners into the top ten of the large schools varsity boys race, with Fox in third, and soph Ben Aragon in fifth.  Poway (0:37), Valhalla (0:31) and San Pasqual (0:37) all had tight five-man groupings.

El Cap's boys dominated the small schools race, going one-two and putting six into the top ten.

The large school girls varsity race was filled with excellent teams, including Torrey Pines, Rancho Bernardo, Valhalla, Helix, Mt. Carmel, Poway and West Hills.  The only top teams missing were University City and Fallbrook.

Torrey's girls, behind Dredge and Julie Komosinki, had the fastest team time in the race (63:24), more than a minute ahead of defending CIF Division I champ Valhalla (64:26).  Valhalla showed great depth beyond their five.

Next were Rancho Bernardo (64:28), which was missing Kaleena Yee, Helix (64:32), and
Mt. Carmel (65:09).

The Results:
At Kit Carson Park, Saturday, September 12.  Conditions:  one hilly section, temperatures mild.
