McInvale, Petersen Are Fastest Finch, Chandler also win big; Vista boys, Torrey girls impress

The Mt. Carmel/Movin' Shoes Invitational is always an early season benchmark.

Ramona's Matt McInvale, Francis Parker's Angela Petersen, Granite Hills' Jason Finch and Serra's Marcus Chandler used the event, held last weekend at Morley Field, to make some bold statements.

Best looking local teams were the Torrey Pines girls, and the Vista boys (narrowly ahead of the West Hills boys).

McInvale ran the fastest boys time of the day on the 2.95-mile course, and beat the most talented field of runners in the large schools junior boys race, despite a race that was hardly textbook stuff.

A fall in the race's first 800 meters cost McInvale maybe 10 seconds and valuable position early, and he later admitted that he ran too quickly to make up ground. He was at the front by the mile mark, and he pulled away from there to win in 15:30.

        The quality of the field he beat was the best in the meet, with six of the fastest eleven times coming just from that race (out of eight boys races).

In separate senior boys races, Granite Hills' Jason Finch and Serra's Marcus Chandler both won without much pressure.  Finch won the large schools senior boys race by 0:21 seconds in 15:15; and Chandler won the small schools senior boys race by 0:32 seconds in 15:21.

Petersen was the outstanding girl runner of the meet, running 15:30 to best Hilltop's Desiree Davila in the small schools soph race.  That was the fastest of the day over the 2.7-mile course, by 0:24 seconds.
 
Petersen's big effort was unexpected, but only because she had not begun the season in great shape.  Two summer surgeries (neither related to a running injury) put a big hole in Petersen's summer training, and few expected her to run this well this early.

Petersen and Davila ran together for the first half of the race, although it seemed that Davila was often setting the pace, and that Petersen was following.  Petersen drew even ascending the hill, and took control as Davila began to look distressed.  From there, the gap widened to a full minute.

Other local race-winners included Orange Glen's Lorena Jimenez (small schools senior girls); Torrey Pines' Camille Dredge (large schools senior girls); Rancho Bernardo's Julie Manson (large schools junior girls); Torrey's Julie Komosinski (large schools soph girls); RB's Allison Hall (large schools frosh girls); and Vista's Ryan Montez (large schools soph boys).

It was a good year for local runners.  San Diego Section girls won six of the eight races, and had five of the fastest six times on the day (and 15 of the fastest 21 times).  Area boys won four of the eight races, but dominated the clock, with five of the fastest six times (and 12 of the best 19).
