Avocado: Torrey girls rip it; Fallbrook boys romp Dredge, Casarez are individual champs

How scary is the Torrey Pines girls team? Pretty doggone scary. The Falcons laid waste to the Avocado girls competition, dom- inating a field that included solid top-ten teams such as Fallbrook and Carlsbad. The Fallbrook boys also won easily. The Falcon girls went 1-2-3 and tacked on an eighth and ninth for just 23 points against quality opposition. Even more impressive were the times. Camille Dredge won in 14:32, and was unpressed. Julie Komosinski ran 14:55 for second, and Jackie Appel ran 15:05 for third. Torrey's fourth and fifth, Krista Romley and Kathy Read, were at 15:30 and 15:31, also considered excellent times on this course. The kicker was that the Torrey girls were not at their best. Komosinski, usually very close to Dredge, suffered from a bad cold. Read, who has been the number three most of the season, also was sick. Appel and Romley balanced out the lineup by running their best races. "Appel has really gone through the roof," Torrey coach Brent Thorne said. "And Romley has made a breakthrough." Fallbrook's boys were similarly not firing on all cylinders, but they handily beat the rest of the league. Junior Efrain Casarez won the race, and teammate Justin Mattos was second. Warriors Josh Wilson (fifth), Pete Coughlin (sixth) and Jose Escobedo (eighth) rounded out the scoring, as Fallbrook totaled just 22 points. The Warriors also put five more runners from 10th to 15th, despite not maxing out. Two who struggled were Escobedo and Bill Ungricht, who have been right behind Casarez most of the season. Showing well in the boys race were Torrey senior Mike Breining (third), El Camino soph Luke Haywas (fourth), Carlsbad soph Ben Miedema (seventh) and Oceanside junior Colin Cornforth (ninth). Carlsbad's young boys team was second in the race. In the girls race, Jamie Carmichael (fifth) and Kim Croswell (sixth) led Fallbrook to second. The team also got solid efforts from freshmen Maija Rohde (tenth) and Jenny Promack (11th). Carlsbad, a very solid team, was third, behind good races from Katie O'Connell (fourth), Kelly Platko (seventh), Cindy Lopresti (12th), Deanna Lynn (13th) and Kristin Woodward (18th). In a later race, Rancho Bernardo's girls ran times in the range of the Torrey team, setting up a great confrontation in the CIF Division I race. The RB girls were clocked at 14:44, 15:00, 15:18, 15:28 and 15:28.

The Results:
At Guajome Park, Saturday, November 14.  Conditions:  course in good shape, weather cool for girls race; warming for boys race.
