Harbor: Peter, Chakos take titles

Crawford's Simon Peter and Coronado's Barbra Chakos took individual league championships at the Harbor League final on November 9. The Harbor decides their team championship on dual meets only. This year's titles went to the Crawford boys and the Coronado girls teams. Both teams went unbeaten in league meets. The Crawford team was not thought to be a contender this year, as coach Jim Bloom faced almost a complete rebuilding. But Bloom came up with a decent group of runners, headed up by a pair of standouts -- Simon Peter and Abdi Abdi. Peter was injured much of the season, and wasn't cleared by doctors to compete until just before the season's final dual against unbeaten Coronado and Christian. Peter and Abdi went one-two in that meet to propel Crawford to the championship. In the league final, Peter basically went wire to wire for the win. Teammate Abdi was injured early in the race, and didn't finish. Although the meet was non-scoring, Christian's boys ran the best race. They would have scored 38 points to win comfortably, but Crawford and Coronado (team leader Paul Whitford did not run because of illness) were not at full strength. Nobody challenged the Coronado girls, who backed up Chakos' win with 2-4-6-8 placings. Islander Samantha Piper was the runnerup, ahead of Clairemont's Jen Wirkus, Coronado's Amanda Thaete, and Clairemont's Rebecca Garcia. The Islander girls would have scored 21 points.

The Results: At Morley Field, Monday, November 9. Conditions: Cool temp- eratures, course softened by recent rains. Dual meet course was used.
