Avocado:
Torrey teams take titles

Lanele Cox, Reed Steel win

In some years, a pair of Avocado team titles for Torrey Pines would seem ho-hum.
This isn't one of those years.
And that made the pair of victories at last week's Avo meet all the more sweet for head Torrey coach Brent Thorne.
The meet was held at Guajome Park on Friday afternoon.
Individual titles were won by Carlsbad junior Reed Steel, and by Escondido soph Lanele Cox.
Torrey's boys, led by a rejuvenated Charley Hulsey, outran Ramona, San Pasqual and Carlsbad to win the meet, and the league championship. The Falcons were 7-0 in duals.
The boys team has been rated by most as one of the top county teams all year --when they are healthy. The team has been nicked up for weeks, and nobody knew what to expect.
But Hulsey, who is often troubled by asthma, ran well in the cold weather, and took second in the race. Jason Lopresti was fourth, Noah Lidman was ninth, and David Burke, who injured a hip in the race, was 11th.
Ramona, their nearest challenger, had a great pack, but only had one runner (James Adams) in the top ten.
The Torrey girls win was definitely an upset. Escondido's girls had gone 7-0 in duals, but an injury had eroded some of their depth, and that was fatal in this meet.
The Cougars had great up-front strength, with Lanele Cox in first, Marissa Leivas in third, and Shawnele Cox in fifth.
Torrey countered with Jaclyn Nolan in second, and 8-9-10-13 places by Jen Morris, Camille Dredge, Kathy Read and Laura Hilton.
Escondido also lost to Ramona by one point, and thus lost a tie for the overall league title. The Avo determines league titles based half on duals, and half on league finals.
"This is the most special of all the league championships," Thorne said of his girls win. "A lot of this came out of themselves. They were talking about this all week."
Except for Nolan, the Falcon scorers are new to this level. Morris, a freshman, is a soccer player. Dredge, a soph, is a track sprinter. Read and Hilton are steady athletes who have improved.
The individual boys race was a study in patience. El Camino's David Romero-Young took out the early pace, and Ramona's Adams had opened a lead by the mile mark.
Steel eventually took over the race, and opened up a big margin. Adams faded to seventh, Romero-Young held on to third, and Hulsey moved up into the second slot. Steel, unpressed, won by 23 seconds.
Lanele Cox and Nolan dueled for most of their race, but the Cougar soph had just too much on this day. It was close between Nolan and Leivas for second.
