Julie Stuart, Grossmont
Senior has vaulted 11-8. She finished in a tie for third in the large-schools section
championship girls pole vault.
Kristen Cosgrove, Mt. Carmel
Senior has a best vault of 10-6. She was sixth in the large schools girls pole vault
section meet.
Jessica Shankland, Carlsbad
Lancer junior has best vault of 11-0. In the section large schools girls pole vault, she
finished in a tie for third.
Latanya Agurs, Grossmont
Foothiller senior long jumps in large-schools section meet. She has a best of 17-6, has an
excellent PR of 39-0.5 in the triple jump, and has run the 100 hurdles in 14.82. In the
section meet, she was third in the hurdles, second in the long jump and third in the
triple jump. She advanced to State meet in hurdles, but not in the triple jump, where she
tied for third in 38-8.75 (Farrington had a better second jump).
Andria Booker, El Camino
The outstanding girl athlete at this year's section finals, she long jumps 19-0.5 to win
the section large school long jump, taking only one attempt. She later returned to win the
triple jump in 40-10, the 100 hurdles in 14.84 and helped the Wildcats to a 48.78
third-place finish in the 4x100 relay. Her bests for the year were 19-6.5 (in State
trials; she was third in finals); 40-11.4 (she won the State title for the second time);
and 14.49 in the hurdles (in Masters meet, where she set a section meet record).
Adrienne Farrington, Rancho Bernardo
The Bronco junior was fourth in the large schools section long jump, where she has best of
17-11.5w. She's slightly better in the triple jump, with a 38-8.75 best, and she has run
12.81 in the 100. In the section large school meet, she was fifth in the 100, and second
in the triple jump. She advanced to State meet in triple jump.
Charles James begins his charge down the backstretch as
the Morse runners make a clean first handoff on their way to an easy win in the section
final large school boys 4x100 relay. Team has best time of 41.41, run at Arcadia. Morse
leadoff runner is Phillip Sanders.
University City clicks on their first
exchange in the small schools boys 4x100 section final, where they won in 41.11.
Lamont Long led off, and handed to Devon Ward. Team later ran a Section record 40.66 in
winning Masters meet.
Courtney Baird, Helix
Highlander junior won the large school girls1600 race handily, in 5:05.90, just off her PR
of 5:05.86. She later won Masters meet in 5:01.71.
LaRonda Hite, Lincoln
Hornet senior won the small school section girls 400 in 59.11. She also was the winner in
the long jump, where she has a PR of 18-4, and she ran a leg on the winning girls x100
relay team, which ran 49.11.
DeAndre Douglas, University City
Centurion senior (center) ran 49.44 to win the small school boys 400, beating Randy
Washington, La Jolla (50.21) and Ryan Blair (University of San Diego) 50.01.

Valhalla's Lesley Bravin stalks Fallbrook's
Cathy Picha in the large schools girls 800 section final. Escondido's Thea Rusthoven
is just behind the pair. Bravin won in 2:14.54, Picha was third in 2:16.90 and Rusthoven
was fourth in 2:20.11.

Camille Dredge. Bravin won in 2:14.54, and Dredge was second in 2:15.08.
Coronado junior Samantha Piper cruises
to an easy win in the small schools section final 800, running 2:19.28. She has a PR of
2:14.13, and has also run 400 in 57.55.
Early in the large schools section final
boys 800, West Hills runners were running 1-2-3. From right, senior Dustin Diaz went
on to win in 1:52.91, soph Evan Fox was third in 1:55.55 and frosh Ben Aragon was eighth
in 1:59.62. Aragon has a PR of 1:58.66. Fox later ran 1:54.96.
Jose Zurita, Chula Vista (the runner in focus):
Spartan senior ran 1:57.83 in large schools 800 section final, taking sixth. He improved
to 1:57.50 in Masters meet.
Tish Matthews, El Camino
Wildcat senior was all alone at the finish of the large school section final girls 300 low
hurdles, running 45.52. She also has a PR of 15.68 in the 100 hurdles, where she was
fourth in the section final. In Masters meet, she ran 44.60 to win and advance to State
meet.
Erin DeHahn, Hilltop
Lancer junior was a decisive winner in the small school section final of the girls 300 low
hurdles, running 46.39.
Sophs ruled in the large school boys 300
hurdles section final. Rancho Bernardo's Bobby Salimi dove at the line to nip Point
Loma's Tony Golston. Salimi was 38.68; Golston ran 38.93. Both are 10th-graders.
Mark Gomez, Rancho Bernardo
Bronco senior vaults in the large schools boys pole vault section final. He won in 14-8;
has a best jump of 14-10. He later advanced to State meet in vault.
Kendra Goffredo, Orange Glen
Patriot senior has PRs of 5:14.62 and 11:15.66. In the large schools section finals, she
was seventh in both the 1600 and 3200. A week earlier, she beat a strong field to win the
Palomar League title in the 3200.
Michelle Barrack, University of San Diego
Junior was third in the small schools section final girls 3200. She's just coming back
from an injury, but ran 5:11 and 11:02 for Uni last year.
Eric Hollins, Escondido
Versatile senior is the outstanding boy athlete in the San Diego area this year. Here, he
wins the section large schools title in the boys triple jump, where he has a best of
46-11.5. His best event is the high jump, where he's cleared 7-0. He also long jumps
22-11, and is a talented sprinter who anchors the Cougar 4x100 relay team.
Tamara Espinoza, Hilltop
Lancer senior won the small school section final girls triple jump, where she has a season
best of 38-6. She also took second in the long jump, where she has a PR of 17-10. In last
year's state finals, she jumped 39-7.75 in the prelims and finished third in the final.
East county rivals Jon Doroski, Valhalla, and Don
Overland-McKay, West Hills, lead the early going in the large school boys 3200 section
final. Doroski has PR of 9:48.7; Overland-McKay has PR of 9:49.91.
Reed Steele, Carlsbad
Lancer senior made a big move with 800 meters to run to leave the field behind in the
large schools boys 3200 section final. He won the race, and has a PR of 9:25.54.

Valhalla's Lesley Bravin rips a 56.6 anchor 400 in
the large school section final girls 4x400 race, and Valhalla wins in 3:57.90.
Rancho Bernardo's Amy Taylor brings home the
stick in second for her team in the large school girls section final 4x400 relay. The
Broncos ran 3:59.56, just holding off a great anchor run by Morse's Monique Henderson
(just behind Taylor), who ran in the 53-range.
Torrey Pines' Camille Dredge gets to the
finish just ahead of Mt. Carmel in the large school girls 4x400 relay section final.
Torrey ran 4:02.56.
Castle Park's Keisha Mierez anchors her
team to a win in the small schools girls 4x400 relay section final. CP ran 3:59.94.
Hilltop's Erin DeHahn takes off for the
final leg of her team's second place finish in the small school girls 4x400 relay
section final. Hilltop ran 4:03.84.
Morse anchor Ike Okenwa brings team to a
win in the large school boys 4x400 relay section final. The Tigers ran 3:18.98, and
lowered that time to 3:15.08 in State trials.
