Harbor:
Clairemont boys, 'Nado girls are the champs
Hamlin, Moreno get titles
The Harbor League finals are a nonscoring affair, with the league's
championships determined strictly on dual meets.
Clairemont's boys team and Coronado's girls team both finished the league
dual meet season undefeated, and were awarded championships.
The finals are for determining individual wards, and Madison's Nick Hamlin
and Crawford's Maria Moreno were the winners. Both runners were popular
champions, as they finished up their Harbor careers in triumph. The two
champs are recognized by league coaches for their outstanding training
habits.
Hamlin ran a solo race, but was clocked in a quick 15:29 for the 3.05-mile
course. That ranks with the quickest times run on the Morley course during
championship week.
In the West, Steve Rider and Brian Sullivan pushed each other to 15:22
times; and, in the East, the Chandler twins paced other to 15:27 and 15:30
times. Hamlin was all alone in his race.
It was a contrast to last year's Harbor boys final, which was last year's
most competitive race of league finals week, when Crawford's Ajani Brown,
Holtville's Miguel Ramirez, Coronado's Trevor Clarke, Claire-mont's Derrick
Davis and Hamlin were all involved. Brown had to outlean Holtville's Ramirez,
who competed as a guest.
This year, after Hamlin, Coronado's Cheyne Jones was second, running a
good 16:10. Clairemont, the league's champ, had four runners in the top
seven, including Juan Torres, Jose Jimenez, Nelson Rivas and Jose Padilla.
All will return next year, along with fifth runner Michael LoForti, for
coach Sean Stevenson's team.
Coronado's champion girls team is a young group that might mature into
a very good squad. The Islanders took 2-3-4 after Moreno, with Barbra Chakos,
Christine Hansen and Kiley Dunlap doing the honors. Chakos and Hansen are
sophs; Dunlap is a freshman. The Islanders' four-five runners, Sam Piper
and Kelly Charboneau, are also sophs.
So, there are already clear-cut favorites in next year's Harbor League,
at least at the team level.
The results:
At Morley Field, Nov. 13.
