Thom Hunt outran a pack of Toads to win the county's biggest footrace-the Coronado Half Marathon--in record-breaking time Tuesday. A junior at University of Arizona, Hunt breezed down Coronado Avenue to the Crown Elementary School finish line to the tune of cheers from the crowd on the curbside and an official 64-minute, 26 second first place time. The old Coronado Half Marathon record, set by Hunt last year, was 65:54.2, The Toads began arriving two minutes after Hunt, led by Ed Mendoza with 66:10 time for the 13 mile distance. What followed was a near sweep of the top finish places by members of the Jamul Toads, a team of determined distance runners who claim, among other credits, the national cross country title, Jeanne Abare was the first woman finisher, winning the open division with a 78:30 clocking. Sue Krenn finished two minutes later. Some 3,200 people of all ages started the run down Sixth Street, along the golf course, down Ocean Boulevard and around North Island NAS-a meet record. Another 600 persons ran in a three-mile race which ended before two miles when a bicycle rider showing runners the route took a wrong turn and finished early.
